CALPASC Participates in Multiple Cal/OSHA Advisory Committees on Potential New Regulations

CALPASC has been directly involved in the last three Cal/OSHA Advisory Committees.

  • Workplace Violence Prevention in Oakland, on January 25, 2018.
  • Indoor Heat Illness Prevention in Oakland, on February 8, 2018.
  • Employee access to the IIPP in Sacramento, on February 13, 2018.

Each meeting followed the same basic flow

  • Cal/OSHA presented an overly broad draft regulation.
  • Labor representatives, worker advocates, and plaintiff attorneys pushed for an even stronger regulation.
  • CALPASC and other employer representatives pushed back on how the regulations go too far, especially since in each case, the intent was to regulate all employers, not just those with high exposures in these areas.

CALPASC will be sending in additional comments shortly, and Cal/OSHA will develop a draft in response. A redraft has already been issued for Indoor Heat Illness Prevention, that makes more sense than the proposal at the meeting.

We will be following up with the redrafts, and any additional advisory meetings to push for a regulation that makes sense to employers, where compliance is clear, and the regulation actually makes for a reasonably safer workplace.
