2015 CALPASC Legislative Day

Leg Day is a tremendous opportunity for our industry stakeholders to make introductions and build relationships with their legislators in a series of in-person meetings at the Capitol. A whole class of legislators are not familiar with our group nor our issues. Your participation puts real-life faces to the issues and is a key component of our advocacy efforts.

As you know, legislative advocacy is a core mission of our Association. As the economic landscape continues to improve slowly yet surely, it is more important than ever that our industry remain at the table and in front of the individuals who set policy for California.

Legislative Day is a yearly opportunity for our Members to act as citizen lobbyists to convey to lawmakers firsthand the issues that are vital to the success of this industry and remind them that without a strong and vibrant construction industry, a favorable overall California economy is next to impossible.

The new Legislature convened on January 5, 2015, with 37 new lawmakers, 38 new committee chairs and three legislators new to leadership positions. It is especially important that given the vast number of new faces at the Capitol this term, many of whom may be there for many years, we make introductions and build relationships with the new class of legislators. Many of the new members are not familiar with our group nor our issues. Member participation puts real-life faces to the issues and is an important component of our advocacy efforts.

This year our messaging will focus on 3 core issues:

  • Continuing industry issues with construction defect and OCIP Wrap UP insurance.
  • Promoting legislation based on Little Hoover Commission recommendations to curb the underground economy.
  • Workers’ Compensation reform—staying the course to allow reforms to improve the workers’ compensation landscape.

In addition, we are arranging to have legislators address our group and provide an update as to the state of affairs at the Capitol.

Legislative Day concludes with a reception where Members can meet and chat with legislators and their staff in a casual and festive environment.

Please note, in order to most effectively schedule legislative visits we are asking members to register by March 20. Booking early will also enable members to take advantage of the lower-priced flights currently available from Southern California to Sacramento via Southwest Airlines. For those who wish to come the evening prior,
