Update from the Cal/OSHA Advisory Committee on Silica in Construction
Friday, January 13, 2017
CALPASC Director of Risk Management, Bruce Wick, has facilitated the Construction Silica Coalition, which is pushing for revisions to the changes made to California's silica regulations, which will take effect June 23, 2017.
An advisory committee was held on December 15, 2016. Unfortunately, one of the Cal/OSHA attendees wrongly advised he had a relevant study that impacted the discussion. It was later discovered that the study was clearly outdated and not relevant. Also, many of the labor attendees came unprepared for productive discussion; and were mostly non-committal.
Thankfully, with the preparation and homework by Bruce and the coalition, the coalition is moving forward to continue the push, and is preparing a response to a discussion document issued by the Cal/OSHA Standards Board. That response will be finalized by January 13, 2017.
Bruce and the coalition will keep pushing as long as it takes to get meaningful revisions to the changes taking place in June.
